Community Service and Outreach
The members of the Financial Planning Association Student Chapter at Virginia Tech have made a strong commitment to service in both the local and state communities. We feel it is our duty to give back, and we commit ourselves to doing so in many different ways.
Virginia Council on Economic Education:
Through our partnership with the Virginia Council on Economic Education (VCEE), we have the opportunity to volunteer for many different projects to benefit Virginia elementary, middle, and high school students.
Governor’s Challenge in Economics and Personal Finance:
This past year, some of our members worked closely with the VCEE to develop the case study for the Governor’s Challenge in Economics and Personal Finance. This case study was featured in a state-wide competition which challenges high school students to delve deeply into the application of real-world financial planning principles. Stock Market Game™:
Our student members participated in leading informational seminars for local elementary and middle school students participating in the Stock Market Game™ in the New River Valley area. The Stock Market Game™ is an online education program used to help teach math, social studies, business, economics, and language skills while focusing on the importance of long-term saving and investment. Students in grades 4-12 participate in teams and manage a simulated investment portfolio.
Junior Achievement:
Several student members volunteered their time with Junior Achievement (JA) to help empower young people to own their economic success. This volunteer-delivered, kindergarten-12th grade program fosters work-readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills, and uses experiential learning to inspire students to dream big and reach their potential. Junior Achievement impacted more than 4.2 million U.S. students in more than 183,000 classrooms in the 2011-2012 school year. With the help of more than 187,000 volunteers, JA students develop the skills they need to experience the realities and opportunities of work and entrepreneurship in the 21st-century global marketplace.
Big Event:
The Big Event at Virginia Tech is a student-run community service effort that has grown into the 2nd largest event of its kind in the nation. Every spring, thousands of students, faculty, and staff come together to complete hundreds of community service projects throughout Blacksburg, Christiansburg and the New River Valley. Projects are completed regardless of need or socioeconomic status; instead, it is The Big Event’s goal to simply say, “Thank you." Seeded in our university’s motto of Ut Prosim (That I may serve) students and community members come together for a truly unparalleled experience.
Relay For Life:
At Relay For Life events, communities across the globe come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much. The funds you raise truly make a difference in the fight against cancer – just ask one of the nearly 14 million cancer survivors who will celebrate another birthday this year!
